A lot of ancient monuments and buildings were preserved in Crete. The island's museums have the best examples of olden days, beginning from Minoan civilization.
Venetian Fortress (Rossa al Mare) is a town wall, built in 1462-1562, that consists of 7 bulwarks and gate.
Historical Museum of Crete - covers the more recent history of Crete.
Morosini Fountain - a fountain built in 1628 and named after Governor Francesco Morosini.
Archeological Museum of Chania - is a small museum housed in former Venetian church of San Francisco that represents objects from the Neolithic and Minoan to late Roman periods.
Nautical Museum of Chania - is located at the north-east end of the Venetian harbor and offers a collection of beautiful seashells.
Archeological Museum of Haraclion - one of the biggest museums in Greece. Its collection has the displays of Minoan era including ceramics, fresco and jewelry.
Basilica of San Marco - located opposite Morosini Fountain.
Knossos Palace, located 5 km from Iraclio, is the biggest palace of Minoan era. It is a labyrinth, known from myths about Minotaur. In Minoan civilization's time Knossos Palace was the administrative, cultural and religion center of Crete.
Holidays
The Cretans love to celebrate and therefore they have a lot of feasts.
The most important holiday is Easter. The dates for Orthodox Easter follow the use of the Julian calendar and may vary from the other Christian Easter dates.
Greek Easter dates for next years: 2006: 23rd April, 2007: 8th April, 2008: 27th April, 2009: 19th April, 2010: 4th April.
6th January - Epiphany - in remembrance of the baptism of Christ.
25th March - Annunciation - is a feast in remembrance of the revolt of 1821 against the Turks
23rd April - Feast of St. George, one of the most important saints in the orthodox religion, the patron saint of shepherds and peasants.
1st of May - May Day, a spring festival when people drive out in the countryside, pick flowers and make wreaths to hang over their house doors.
21st May - ceremonies of commemoration of the invasion of Crete by the Germans in 1941 and the Cretan resistance.
24th June - Feast of Saint John the Baptist - Birthday of Saint John the Baptist and summer solstice.
20th July - Name day of the Prophet Elias.
15th August - Assumption Feast of the Panagia is the most important feast of the year after Easter.
28th October - Oxi Day Greek national day - commemorates the "No" (Oxi) of the Greek government to the capitulation ultimatum of Mussolini in 1940.
6th December - Saint Nicholas 'Day. He is the patron of sailors and seamen.
Christmas is far less significant than Easter but it becomes more and more visible every year.
New Year is a family celebration.
